Beautiful colours and textures

Our heritage breeds produce a wide range of colours. Like our knitting wools, the variety of sheep that we have means that there's plenty to choose from.

DORSET DOWN

Often among the larger of our sheepskins, these are a beautiful creamy-white, and wear well with time. Suitable for a luxurious bedside mat.

HEBRIDEAN

Hard-wearing, with a long staple, the Hebridean fleeces are often sun-bleached at the tips which produces a natural variegated colour across the wool. We usually leave these long and shaggy.

SHETLAND

The softest and most delicate of our sheepskins, and most varied in colour. Perfect for babies blankets, or for those with more sensitive skin.

JACOB

Wonderfully spotty, dotty, and pretty, these bold sheepskins will make a statement wherever you choose to place it.

HERDWICK

Our newest breed of sheep, Herdwicks are born black, and as they age their fleece begins to turn white. This produces delightful skins in a range of silver-grey colours, and always lustrous.

Size

We categorise each skin as either Large, Medium, or Small. Occasionally there may be an Extra Large or Extra Small. All of our photos of skins have a metre rule for scale.

Wool length

Depending on the time of year, the fleece will naturally be longer, 3 to 5 inches, or short, half an inch to 2 inches. These are approximations only, but the length shows fairly well in the photographs.

Wool finish

When being processed the skins are either brushed out smooth, or left natural. The final finish also depends on the quality of the wool on the sheep, i.e. Dorset Downs tend to be fairly smooth, while Shetlands are more likely to be curly. We use the words Shaggy, Silky, Smooth, Shiny, and Rough to differentiate these finishes. More details on this to follow. Please call or email us if you want further clarification.

Edge finish

The edge of the skins are sometimes left Natural, with the sections of hairless skin left on, or with these Trimmed to a smooth outline. More details on this to follow. Please call or email us if you want further clarification.

Wool quality

One of the variations is whether the winter underfleece is still present on the skin. This can often produce a felted effect, which increases the softness and has a cushiony feel to it. We call these Felted, and usually only occur in the longer fleeces. These are especially good for a warm underlayer in bed, or for using as a luxurious exercise mat. More details on this to follow. Please call or email us if you want further clarification.

Our sheepskins

Each sheepskin is unique. We have done our best to describe each sheepskin clearly, but if you would like to have another photo of the sheepskin you hope to buy, we are happy to send you one - please email or call us. Please note that this is likely to add between 2-5 days onto postage times, as we cannot guarantee to do this immediately for you.

Our sheepskins are processed not far from us in Devon by the oldest sheepskin tannery in Britain using traditional techniques. This means that the curing process is not Organically certified, however they all come from our organic sheep here on the farm. We aim to minimise the chemicals that we use on the farm, which means that there will be no residual chemicals in the fleece. At present, we feel that this is the best compromise we can offer for quality, local production, and price.
